Bear Essential Combat
Volunteer and Community Work

Coach Bear believes firmly in contributing to the local communities and volunteers the time of not only himself but also his staff and students. Working with Eleven government or community sponsored programs such as Girls Inc, Junior League, Planned Parent Hood, Mothers Against Domestic Abuse and Kids Pace, Bear assists Women and Children in becoming more conscious of their surroundings, body language and potential predators in order to avoid/deter/diffuse/overcome an assault.

Bear manages to accomplish this task very effectively through both mental and physical training. First Bear gives his students helpful hints and tricks about body language, speech and presence. He teaches his students that when, "They are walking, they are talking" discussing all of the common mistakes a person may make with their body language, such as looking down, having slumped posture, or putting ones hands inside their sleeves. Basic excercises such as having a large male follow behind the student and have that student practice turning around, place their hands on their hips with legs wide apart while asking a question in a strong voice such as, "How Can I Help You?", or "Who are You?" By asking a question the would-be victim places themself in a position of power and shows the attacker that they are AWARE, they are CONFIDENT, and that if they do attack it will be CONFRONTATIONAL and LOUD and NASTY.

Having traveled to 40 countries, living in a few of them, and competing in literally hundreds of combative matches around the world, Bear has come to understand the instinct that is human nature.

Because of the exposure to varied cultures, and his attempt to live exactly as the general populace, which often means extremely poor, Bear has developed easy, effective and universal street smarts. Running from gangs of hooligans in Portugal, walking the streets of the Dominican Republic with a machete, bar fights in Korea, gang fights in Thailand, suriving communist Cuba, being strongarmed by crooked police in Mexico, Spain and Serbia, and overcoming a few russians an angry Italian and some crazy Scottish people are all part of the experiences that have helped Bear to be informed well enough to advise the average Joe or Jane on what to do and how in a real life/street situation. He uses this knowledge to help people identify and gracefully evade potential volatile or dangerous situations.

Being involved in the community and helping out one another, is really what it SHOULD be all about. Pulling together and helping out one another is what makes a community strong in its relations and proud of its identity. The last project BEC was involved in was the KABOOM project which was an awesome project put on by Girls Incorporated and sponsored by Home Depot. Bear Essential Combat supplied man power as well as the Costa Mesa Polica and Fire Department and countless other volunteers. The end result? A brand new, fitness and safety oriented playground built for the 4 - 15 year old girls of lowe income homes that atttend Girls Incorporated afters school and during school breaks. If you are interested in lending a hand in he next volunteer project or self defense seminar we put on, just call us and let us know at 949 294 1280 and we will put you on the list of BEC volunteers; this could also be a great way for High School students to get their community service hours!
